More than 10 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. So that's not terribly shocking.
Anon - where did you get that stat? I'd like to see where that's from. Is that figure common knowledge now? You don't find it shocking that 10 percent of the population in the richest society the world has ever seen lives under the poverty line? Especially where unemployment is only around 4-5% (not counting those in prisons which is another 2% supported by the state).
US Census Bureau had the poverty rate at 12.3 percent in 2006, but I'm not sure what the current rate is. Keep in mind though, that poverty is a relative term, and the nation's poor are still better off in many ways than the destitute living in developing countries.
And by the way, I am officially impoverished since I make about $23k a year as a Phd student in silicon valley.
Thanks for passing that along. Poor certainly is a relative term. Do you qualify for food stamps? If you do, remember you can't buy the things you really want with them - like cigarettes and candy.

I believe WalMart teaches their employees how to enroll in welfare and collect food stamps.
The term "working poor" refers to people who work for a living and are still below the poverty line. It's perverse that we tolerate that in such a wealthy country.
